The resistant limestone now shelters rare calcicolous plants like alpine carnations and rock roses, earning it a place in the EU’s Natura 2000 network.

Archaeological excavations since 1866 uncovered over 100,000 animal bones—including horses, bison, and mammoths—and thousands of flint tools at the foot of the rock.
